Pokemon GO developer Niantic is working on a new mobile game based on the world of Harry Potter.
Called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the title is expected to use both location-based and augmented reality features.
According to TechCrunch, the game is being co-developed by Warner Bros. Interactive and its new subsidiary Portkey Games.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is set for a 2018 release date.
A blockbuster-in-waiting?
Few other details on the project are available, but it’s likely the title will be similar to Niantic’s previous games Pokemon GO and Ingress before it.
Pokemon GO has helped ignite the augmented reality sector following its blockbuster launch in 2016.
The title has generated more than $1 billion in revenue and has been downloaded well over 752 million times.
Whether Niantic can reach such heights with the Harry Potter IP remains to be seen, but the series certainly has the widespread global appeal that could bring the game into the mainstream conscience.
Niantic was recently ranked second in our Top 50 Developer 2017 list.
