Games chat platform Discord raises $150 million at $2bn valuation

Games chat platform Discord has raised more than $150 million investment in a deal that values the company at around $2.05 billion.

The funding round was led by Greenoaks Capital and also includes Tencent, IVP, Index Ventures, Firstmark and Technology Opportunity Partners.

Expansion plans

Discord is a hugely popular and free voice communications platform amongst gamers, home to more than 200 million users.

The service recently opened up a storefront to sell PC games. We previously delved into why Discord could become a serious competitor to Steam on our sister-site PCGamesInsider.biz, based on the moves of numerous mobile chat apps into providing games.

That store now aims to offer developers a 90/10 revenue split in 2019.

The $150m funding round comes over a year after the company raised $50 million back in June 2017.
