Scopely acquires Star Trek Fleet Command dev Digit Game Studios

Mobile publisher Scopely has picked up Dublin-based Star Trek Fleet Command developer Digit Game Studios for an undisclosed fee.

The two have already been working together since 2015 on the hit licensed 4X strategy game. Released in November 2018, it's said to be the fastest title on Scopely’s slate that is projected to surpass $100 million since its release.

Digit CEO Richard Barnwell will continue to manage the studio and its 70-plus staff following the acquisition.

Road to riches

Scopely’s overall annual revenue run rate across its portfolio is now said to be north of $400 million. Its other titles include Yahtzee With Buddies, WWE Champions 2019, The Walking Dead: Road To Survival, Looney Tunes World of Mayhem and Wheel of Fortune: Free Play.

“Late last year, we entered the strategy genre with Star Trek Fleet Command, which has proven to be a hugely successful entry into the challenging-to-tackle MMO/strategy sector," said Scopely chief revenue officer Tim O’Brien.

"The trusted partnership we have built the last few years with our collaborator Digit, also laid the foundation for even more opportunities in the strategy game space.

“Game, tech and publishing expertise across both teams resulted in quality execution and an experience players are enjoying and engaging with consistently. It’s exciting to see the game already garnering industry awards, showcasing that our deep collaboration has been a great mix for Fleet Command.

“We’ve achieved some major milestones the last few months and look forward to further scaling the Scopely business with Digit, who will be a fantastic addition to our growing global team.”

Last year Scopely raised $160 million in a Series C funding round aimed at supercharging its M&A strategy. To date, it has raised over $250 million in total.

Scopely VP of corporate development Rob Ricca will be a speaker at Pocket Gamer Connects Seattle, which takes place on May 13th to 14th.
