Plaintiff drops game addiction lawsuits against industry giants

• Lawyers from the aforementioned companies defended themselves by invoking First Amendment protections

Two game addiction lawsuits filed against some of the top companies in the video games industry have been dismissed by the plaintiff. 

According to Game File, the lawsuits were filed against Epic, Activision Blizzard, Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games, Roblox, Microsoft, and Sony in Arkansas and Ohio. 

Lawyers from the aforementioned companies defended themselves by invoking First Amendment protections and arguing that “the plaintiffs should be bound by user agreements that mandate arbitration, not lawsuits."

Game addiction cases

This is just one of many game addiction lawsuits, as a dozen were reportedly dismissed in June.  

Reuters reports that a woman once sued companies in East Saint Louis, claiming her grandchild became addicted to video games at age seven, requiring therapy and an education plan. 

However, Epic found the child's account had only logged one hour of gameplay. 

Another recently dismissed case involved a mother alleging her child played games for 12 to 14 hours daily and spent $3,000 on in-game content.
