Wired has reignited speculation that Apple is set to launch a premium $19.99 section of the App Store, suggesting that tomorrow's media unveiling of the iPhone 3.0 software could see an announcement.
Here's what the article says:
"We're hearing rumors that Apple could introduce a "premium" section in the store, in order to sell more expensive third-party programs. The premium section would largely be focused on games, giving game makers a channel to offer more in-depth (and pricier) titles without getting lost in the clutter of free and $1 apps."
Wired doesn't mention that these rumours actually first emerged in January on this site, so we'll have to blow our own trumpet on that score.
They subsequently swept the web, and were confirmed by other sites including IGN and Slide To Play. Since then, firms including Gameloft, Digital Chocolate and Glu Mobile have given their opinions on the plan.
All eyes will be on the iPhone 3.0 event tomorrow to see if a premium apps section is part of the announcement.
