In the opening keynote for Pocket Gamer Connects San Francisco, Samsung has reiterated its desire to emerge as a serious player in the app store space.

Mihai Pohontu, its VP of Emerging Platforms, spoke about how the company aims to position its Galaxy Apps platform as a curated store within the broader mobile space.

Quantity over quality

Positioned as an alternative to the millions of apps available on the App Store and Google Play, Galaxy Apps’ unique selling point will be its emphasis on quality.

Eschewing quantity for a focus on proven quality that’ll benefit users, Pohontu said “When we launch a device, we’re looking for content that really shows off the quality of the devices.”

“We have amazing distribution mechanisms in the mobile state that are very popular and generate loads of traffic, the majority of developers aren’t making money. And a lot of good content isn’t getting covered.

“Galaxy Apps is meant to be a premium and unique curated app store front. Usually, curation is done by employees working in stores but we want to work with external partners like Pocket Gamer to recommend premium content into our app store.

"We want a modest stream of apps coming into the store, but ones that have quality.”

Emerging platforms

The move comes as part of Samsung’s efforts to broaden into developing areas of the mobile economy.

Samsung is aiming to create a full ecosystem to support wearables, mobile VR and the internet of things to strengthen its position within emerging markets.

And while Galaxy Apps may play only a small part in surfacing emerging content, Samsung hopes the quality of the store will further help to establish the centrality of mobile to the modern economy.
