Square Enix has officially cancelled geolocation game Kingdom Hearts Missing Link more than three years on from its initial announcement.

The decision was reached after the development team concluded it would be "difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time".

Square Enix first revealed this Kingdom Hearts mobile entry in April 2022, though its location-based gameplay wasn’t made public until later.

Beta testers first got their hands on the game in early 2023, before nine months of silence followed until Square Enix revealed a series of ambiguous images that October.

The company then confirmed Missing Link’s geolocation gameplay in November 2023, ahead of another closed beta test exclusive to the UK and Australia.

Clarification came that a player’s location information would be used at all times during play to display their current position on the in-game map and judge proximity to other players, who were able to team up into parties of three during the beta.

Missing something

"We have made the decision to cancel the development of Kingdom Hearts Missing Link. We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the development team posted today, May 12th, 2025.

"Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.

"We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who gave us their support and assistance with the multiple closed beta tests. We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement."

After years in development, the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing Link contrasts Square Enix’s mission to leverage its IPs on mobile and "produce hit titles that speak to the global market".

The company has continued on with Japan-only releases like Emberstoria, meanwhile closing down titles like Echoes of Mana, Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light, SinoAlice, Nier Reincarnation, War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and more over the past two years alone.

Kingdom Hearts Union X Dark Road was also delisted from the App Store and Google Play Store in 2024, making it exclusively available to those who had already downloaded it.

Missing Link’s development team confirmed today that the Kingdom Hearts series will continue despite the latest cancellation.
