Not even the strongest advocates of smart TVs would suggest the platform has been a commercial success, especially when it comes to gaming.
Of course, there are lots of reasons, from UX to hardware limitations and - most importantly - customer education.
But perhaps the most important and subtle one is billing.
After all, when companies can generate revenue from a platform, they'll suddenly start to take it a whole lot more seriously.
And that's the sort of sea change US vendor Paymentwall is hoping to kickstart with its PW Smart TV payment solution.
Many ways to pay
Described as an all-in-one payment option, it will enable consumers to use over 120 different payment options, including credit and debit cards, carrier billing, eWallets, bank transfers, prepaid cards, and mobile payments.
Alternatively, checkout can be completed on a secondary device like a laptop, tablet or smartphone by visiting a unique URL or scanning a QR code.
The platform's geo-location technology means that available payment options - supporting over 80 currencies - are optimised for specific regions, and mostly importantly, the remote control-based system only requires numerical input.
As for developer support, Paymentwall says it's just a case of integrating its API
