Samsung has announced that its Oculus-powered mobile VR headset, the Gear VR, has sold more than 300,000 units in Europe in 2016.

It reports "an upsurge of adoption in the mobile VR market in Europe" driven by the success of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones which, thanks to a limited-time offer, give customers a cut-price deal on the Gear VR as well as free access to premium VR games.

Incentive

"The smartphone is already so fundamental to our lives but connecting it with a product like the Gear VR opens up incredible new experiences that are often as emotional as they are immersive," commented Samsung Electronics Europe's CMO David Lowes.

"With this new incentive, we’re encouraging broader VR adoption so that more people can experience this amazing new technology for themselves.”

More affordable than PC-based virtual reality systems, and built around increasingly ubiquitous smartphone hardware, the Samsung Gear VR now has a good opportunity to lead the way in terms of mainstream VR adoption.

However, it may be challenged if the rumours about Google I/O 2016 are fulfilled.
