Garena and Kadokawa Corporation have unveiled the first look at the anime adaptation of Garena Free Fire, the popular mobile battle royale game developed and published by Garena.

The teaser showed that the upcoming anime will be centred on Kelly, one of the game’s most iconic characters. It follows Kelly and her allies as they uncover a hidden conspiracy beneath a seemingly peaceful world.

The Garena Free Fire anime was announced in May 2024 as being produced by a Japanese studio alongside Kadokawa Qingyu, Kadokawa’s overseas branch.

The new trailer confirms Ken Takahashi as director, who has previously worked on anime adaptations of gacha game Fate/Grand Order. He is also known for his work on Ragna Crimson and Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya, and has contributed to popular anime like Sword Art Online and Kill la Kill.

The Free Fire adaptation’s animation production is being handled by studio Candy Box, known for Blue Archive The Animation and Azur Lane Bisoku: Zenshin!. The new series will be broadcast and streamed globally.

The trailer also features a reimagined version of Garena Free Fire’s signature melody as the theme song. Though no release date was confirmed, the anime is "coming soon".

Continuous growth

With a track record of anime collaborations including Attack on Titan, One Punch Man and Demon Slayer, Garena's move to make its own anime adaptation is far from its first attempt to reach fans of the genre.

Other collaborations include partnerships with football star Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Netflix to bring Squid Game-inspired challenges to the game later this month.

Garena’s transmedia move follows a broader industry trend of games adapting into shows and films, whether that’s A Minecraft Movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie or League of Legends spinoff Arcane.

Other major upcoming adaptations include Supercell’s CLASH, Rovio’s third Angry Birds movie and Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda live adaptation.
