Unity CEO John Riccitiello is holding firm on his belief that VR won't be mainstream until at least 2020.

In an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Riccitiello stated that he is "a huge believer, long-term, in AR/VR".

However, he also said that "it is going to take a few years for these platforms to reach audiences of 10s or 100s of millions".

"2017 will be a growth year, but likely not explosive growth. Watch for big / massive games in three to five years," he wrote.

What is mainstream?

He also clarified that he defines "mainstream" as "100 million consumers using the tech regularly". He stated that VR will hit this milestone by 2020.

His opinion hasn't changed since we interviewed him at Unite Boston in September 2015. At the time, he said that "2016 is not a consumer marketplace for VR" and that "I think the year for VR and AR is likely to be 2020".

Elsewhere in the AMA, Riccitiello professed his love for Super Mario Run, which was built in Unity, and claimed his favourite sandwich is a BLT.
