Investment firm Merak Capital has penned a strategic partnership with Huawei Cloud to accelerate the growth of Saudi Arabia's games industry.

The partnership will provide video game startups in the Exel Gaming Accelerator program with workshops on cloud-native game development, personalised technical consultation, and cost optimisation.

It will also include knowledge-sharing sessions, technical workshops, and collaborative events to promote innovation in the games sector.

The partnership builds on Merak Capital's $80 million gaming fund to support the Kingdom's gaming and esports sector. The fund is overseen by the National Development Fund, the Social Development Bank, and the Saudi Esports Federation.

Forging the ecosystem

“The gaming industry represents a crucial frontier in Saudi Arabia’s digital transformation," said Huawei Cloud Saudi Arabia CEO Lawrence Liu. “By combining Huawei Cloud’s advanced infrastructure with Merak Capital’s investment expertise, we’re creating a powerful ecosystem empowering local gaming startups to innovate and compete globally.

“This partnership demonstrates our commitment to supporting Vision 2030’s goals of digital economic diversification and our broader mission of developing the tech ecosystem in Saudi Arabia.”

Merak Capital founder and CEO Abdullah Altamami added: “The $80 million gaming fund, supported by the National Development Fund, and the launch of Exel Gaming Accelerator reaffirm our dedication to cultivating a thriving gaming ecosystem in the Kingdom.

“Through our partnership with Huawei Cloud, we are ensuring that startups have access to cutting-edge technology and essential resources, empowering them to enhance their capabilities and successfully expand into new markets.”

Merak Capital has been on a partnership spree lately. Earlier this week, the firm teamed up with Savvy Games Group and Microsoft to help developers expand internationally by connecting them with investors and industry leaders.

Elsewhere, Merak’s Exel Gaming Accelerator is now accepting applications from games startups seeking mentorship, funding, and strategic support, with a deadline of February 16th, 2025.
