Microsoft Gaming names Kayleen Walters as head of Mojang Studios

Microsoft Gaming has appointed Kayleen Walters as new head of Mojang Studios effective immediately.
As reported by Variety, Walters will be based in Redmond and travel frequently to Stockholm, reporting to Microsoft's studios chief operations officer Helen Chiang. She previously oversaw Minecraft's brand and entertainment and also served as VP of franchise marketing in her 13 years stint at Lucasfilm.
Walters takes over from Åsa Bredin who is stepping down to focus on personal goals. Bredin joined Mojang in 2021 and became studio head in 2023. They will remain with Mojang through the end of February to help with the transition.
Elsewhere, Federico San Martin will now oversee franchise development, reporting to Walters. Amy Stillion will expand her role as chief of staff supporting both Microsoft’s game content and studios operations, as well as Mojang Studios. Stillion will also lead Mojang’s Redmond People Experience team.
Vision for the future
“I am thrilled to share that I am taking on the role of Head of Mojang Studios, the incredible team behind Minecraft," said Walters in a LinkedIn post. “This is an amazing opportunity to lead such a talented group of individuals and continue to build on the legacy of one of the most beloved games in the world.
“I am looking forward to working closely with the team to bring even more creativity, innovation, and fun to our community. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey. Let's build something amazing together!"
Microsoft game content and studios COO Helen Chiang added: “Change is never easy, but I have full confidence in this team and its ability to deliver incredible experiences for our players and community.
“With strong leadership in place and a clear vision for the future, we are well-positioned to tackle the challenges we face in the marketplace with speed and momentum.”
