Rovio confirms Angry Birds Movie 2 for September 20th 2019

Rovio has confirmed it's teaming up with Sony Pictures to develop The Angry Birds Movie 2 for a cinematic release on September 20th 2019.

The first film’s voice acting cast of Jason Sudeikis (Red), Josh Gad (Chuck), Bill Hader (Leonard), Danny McBride (Bomb) and Peter Dinklage (Mighty Eagle) are all set to reprise their roles.

They’ll be joined by Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones, who will play the film’s main villain, as well Golden Globe-winner Rachel Bloom, Emmy-winner Sterling K. Brown, Overboard actor Eugenio Derbez, Silicon Valley’s Zach Woods and more.

The film will be directed by Thurop Van Orman, whose previous credits include The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Adventure Time. He’ll be heading up the film alongside co-director John Rice, who’s previously worked on King of the Hill and Rick and Morty.

Ice Age co-writer Peter Ackerman is penning the screenplay.

"I'm thrilled about our incredibly talented filmmaking team and the hilarious people we've brought together for the sequel,” said Angry Birds Movie 2 film producer John Cohen.

“We're so happy that Jason, Josh, Bill, Danny, and Peter are back for a second adventure joined by Leslie, Rachel, Sterling, Eugenio and this awesome ensemble of new talent. We'll have many more exciting announcements to share soon.”

The original Angry Birds Movie was released in May 2016 and made $352 million at the global box office. Its production budget was said to be around $73 million.
