Roblox-based gardening and pet simulator Grow a Garden has hit 8.9 million concurrent users, setting a new record for the most concurrent users in a single Roblox experience ever.

The figure was highlighted in GameDiscoverCo’s newsletter, which attributed Grow a Garden’s success to a "major groundswell of organic interest" and aimed to quash rumours of bots inflating figures.

According to GameRant, on May 24th Grow a Garden outperformed the concurrent user count of Steam’s top 100 games combined - at nearly 7.8m concurrent players versus Steam’s 7.3m.

This sudden rise coincided with the simulator’s Version 1.07.0 update, which introduced new limited-time events, a means for players to expand their gardens up to four times, and more than 100 new decorative options. New items included harvesting tools, gnomes and statue cosmetics.

Growing to lofty heights

Grow a Garden was created by a solo developer and launched in March this year. It was quickly acquired by New Zealand-based Roblox experience developer Splitting Point Studios, whose CEO Janzen ‘Jandel’ Madsen soon took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the game’s success.

He shared that Grow a Garden was the fastest game to reach one billion total visits on the platform, achieved in its first 33 days.

After setting a previous Roblox record of 5m concurrent users on May 17th, the experience has been breaking its own records with new highs of 7.3m on May 24th and 8.9m later that weekend.

This means that over the course of one week, Grow a Garden’s peak concurrent user count rose by 77%.

The latest high was also more than double Steam’s individual game record, at approximately 3.2m with BUPG: Battlegrounds back in 2018. More recent Steam hits like 2024’s Black Myth: Wukong and Palworld have barely reached a quarter of Grow a Garden’s latest height, with record concurrent user counts of 2.4m and 2.1m respectively.

Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki has aspirations to see "10% of all gaming revenue" flow through the Roblox ecosystem and is on a mission to grow the platform to 1bn daily active users.
