Tencent has increased its stake in From Software parent company Kadokawa by 1.11% to bring its total ownership to 7.97%.
As reported by Nikkei, the Chinese publishing giant’s subsidiary SixJoy Hong Kong Limited announced the increased stake in a filing to the Kanto Finance Bureau as part of a capital business alliance between the two companies.
Tencent's 7.97% stake brings it within two percentage points of Sony, which became Kadokawa's largest shareholder in December after increasing its stake to 10%.
At the time, Sony acquired over 12 million new shares for ¥50 billion ($318m) as part of a strategic capital and business alliance agreement.
Both Sony and Tencent hold stakes in FromSoftware, having acquired a combined 30.34% in 2022, with Sony owning 14.09%. Despite these investments, Kadokawa remains the majority shareholder with a 69.66% stake.
Kadokawa is the parent company of From Software, the developer behind Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring.
Combining strengths
Sony and Kadokawa plan to strengthen their partnership through joint investments, discovering new creators, and expanding media adaptations of Kadokawa's IP.
Planned initiatives include potential live-action adaptations of Elden Ring, co-producing and expanding global anime distribution via Sony, publishing Kadokawa's games, and developing talent for virtual production.
