Unity 6 is getting its first update in 2025 with higher frame rates, improved performance, support for foldable Android screens, and more promises in Unity 6.1.

The update marks the first of three planned for this year, following testing with customers in production environments pre-release.

Smoother gameplay is also expected to come from the Unity 6.1 update, with lower CPU and GPU loads for improved device performance. Improved debugging has also been confirmed.

Furthermore, Unity is expanding its range of supported platforms, adding support for Android XR build profiles, Meta Quest, instant games and large, foldable Android screens, unlocking new development options for a wider range of mobile devices.

WebGPU will be available to all developers on supported browsers.

"We don’t want developers to have to choose between stability and new features, or between fidelity and ubiquity. We are committed to delivering it all," said Unity president and CEO Matt Bromberg.

"Pressure testing new releases in production environments with our partners is enabling much higher quality builds."

Updates ahead

Later in 2025, Unity also plans to introduce new AI-powered workflows to help developers build games faster. "Agentic AI tools" have been promised to automate complex and repetitive tasks, with integration directly into Unity’s editor.

"Seamless integration" of third-party GenAI solutions, attempts to better support developers in diagnosing issues and improvements to player acquisition are also expected.

The base version of Unity 6 went live on October 17th, 2024, almost a decade on from Unity 5. The return to the old naming convention came as the company recommitted itself to games developers, with "significant improvements" to multiplayer games and a focus "primarily on stability and performance".

Unity also reported that 90% of developers' latest games were released on mobile, as 2024 saw a 34% year-over-year increase in developers targeting three or more platforms.
