The German games market shrank by 6% to €9.4 billion ($10.1bn) in 2024, according to a new report.

Data from the German Games Industry Association (Game), using figures from YouGov Shopper, Nielsen IQ, and Data.ai, revealed that sales from games on PC, console and mobile devices dropped 6% to €5.5bn ($5.9bn).

In-game and in-app purchases fell 3% to €4.6bn ($4.9bn), while premium game sales fell by 17% to €921 million ($992m).

Hhardware revenues dropped 10% to €2.9bn ($3.1bn) in 2024, with console sales seeing the steepest decline, declining 26% to €807m ($869m).

On a more positive note, online game services grew 12% to €965m ($1bn) in 2024, up from €860m ($926m) the previous year.

A renewed growth

"After years of frequent strong growth, the German games market took a breather in 2024," said Game managing director Felix Falk. "This was due in part to the fact there were fewer game hits last year and that the demand for game consoles has normalised again.

"The greatest growth is seen in online game services like cloud gaming – which underscores the perpetual dynamics and innovative strength of the games industry.

“In combination with new game consoles and blockbuster titles that have already been announced, this promises renewed overall growth in the near future."
