UGC games startup Liminal Experiences has raised $5.8 million in a seed funding round.
The startup, founded by a team of veterans from Riot Games, Blizzard and more, is focused on using AI to “empower" human creativity and envisions a future where millions of players can leverage their creativity and share their stories globally.
Liminal allows players to create 3D episodic adventure stories and offers intuitive tools for building, decorating, and character customisation. It also has quest creation and gameplay editing features to make designing experiences accessible.
The platform supports multiplayer collaboration that allows up to four players to create and share. Liminal is still in development, with an alpha release planned for 2026.
Bitkraft Ventures, Riot Games, and OTK Media Group participated in the round alongside angel investors like Riot Games founder Marc Merrill.
An AI-powered future
"AI in gaming is a sensitive topic, as many developers worry about being replaced, and players grapple with its ethical issues," said Liminal Experiences founder and CEO Brendan Mulligan.
"Wading into the debate is fraught, so most gaming companies avoid discussing AI while quietly exploring options internally. This leaves the public conversation to startups founded by tourists to the industry to pitch their vision of the future.
“There’s a real need for studios willing to stand for a positive vision of an AI-enabled future, which should come from developers focused on unleashing, not replacing, human creativity."
He added: “A positive vision of the future should recognise the power of AI to ignite the imaginations of players of all ages, letting everyone realise the fantasy of making their own game experiences.
“At Liminal, we’re focused on centering humans in the creative process, ensuring that AI is a tool to create shared experiences that build communities, bringing players closer together."
