Netflix has officially greenlit its live-action Assassin's Creed series with Emmy nominees Roberto Patino and David Wiener on board as showrunners.

The Assassin's Creed live-action series is described as a high-stakes thriller exploring the covert conflict between two factions: one seeking to control humanity's future, the other fighting to protect free will through characters navigating key moments in history.

Initially announced in 2020, Ubisoft and Netflix's content deal will see multiple Assassin's Creed adaptations, with this live-action series being the first.

The show is executive produced by David Wiener, Roberto Patino, and key figures from Ubisoft Film & Television, including Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill, alongside Matt O'Toole.

New ambitions

Netflix will also stream Ubisoft's upcoming Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, set to release this autumn.

“We are so excited to work alongside Roberto, David, and our Netflix partners to bring this beloved franchise to series," said executive producer and head of content at Ubisoft Film & Television Margaret Boykin.

“We look forward to delivering an experience that speaks to the heart of what fans love about Assassin's Creed, while introducing its unforgettable worlds and timeless themes to new audiences worldwide."

Netflix vice president of Scripted Series Peter Friedlander commented: “When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal to bring the rich, expansive world of Assassin's Creed to life in bold new ways.

“Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it's inspiring to see just how far that vision has come.

“Guided by the deft hands of Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the team has carefully crafted an epic adventure that both honours the legacy of the Assassin's Creed franchise and invites longtime fans and newcomers alike to experience the thrill of the Brotherhood as never before."

Earlier this week, Ubisoft appointed Christophe Derennes and Charlie Guillemot as co-CEOs of its new Tencent-backed subsidiary, which will manage key franchises like Rainbow Six, Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry.

Tencent recently invested $1.25bn for a 25% stake in the entity, which remains fully controlled by Ubisoft and will provide royalties to the Chinese publisher.
