Saudi-based football platform Copa Fantasy has raised 1.1 million riyals ($300,000) to scale to become the ultimate gaming destination for sports fans.

The team told PocketGamer.biz that the funds will support its mission to “become the region's first true football super-app".

Founded in 2018, Copa Fantasy began as an idea that soft-launched in 2022, moved into alpha in 2023, and entered beta in 2024.

Part of the beta release was a new Predictor game and a free-to-play monetisation model, which Copa Fantasy said saw strong early engagement with average revenue per paying user already tracking to exceed customer acquisition costs.

The platform's community of over 100,000 users have since entered 1.5 million contests centred around their favourite players and teams.

Becoming a super app

Copa Fantasy covers multiple leagues and games that complement the live viewing experience. Its flagship title, Fantasy football, lets users act as managers, building teams that score based on real match performances.

“Copa Fantasy is at the intersection of sports and gaming, two massive industries with so much untapped potential in the region," said Copa Fantasy founder Abdullah Eid.

“We've seen unicorn businesses emerge all around the world in this space, but not in MENA, a region obsessed with football and gaming. With our game, experience and Merak's backing, we're aiming to become the region's first true football super-app."

The investment is part of Exel by Merak's recent allocation of $300,000 each in 17 game startups as part of its gaming accelerator.
