- With two of the mobile world's biggest games under their belt its been an amazing 12 months for the company
It’s been an amazing year for Scopely and following the success (and MGA win) for Monopoly GO! they only bagged the prestigious publisher of the year award too…
Live from Cologne Germany - in a brief respite from all the action at this year’s Gamescom - PocketGamer.biz hosted the great and the good from across the mobile industry in a star-studded event tailor-made to reward all the creators, makers, movers and shakers that make mobile happen.
You’ll find a full list of all the 23 winners from the awards here with the Game of the Year award (sponsored by Appcharge) and Publisher of the Year award (sponsored by Amber) being perhaps the two most prestigious wins on the table…
And both went to Scopely.
Smash hits
Monopoly GO! has had a stellar year. The game got off to a flying start, being the jewel in the crown of Scopely’s acquisition by Savvy Games and becoming the biggest casual launch of the last five years following its release in April 2023.
But never forget that Scopely also own and run another of 2024/2024’s biggest smashes - the unstoppable Stumble Guys.
The publisher smartly acquired the game through their a deal with Kitka Games back in September 2022 and since taking it on have built on its fanbase and reputation with genius IP swaps, events and updates.
In late 2022 the company appointed Amazon veteran Phil Hardin to the position of CFO, followed by Activision Blizzard veteran Eric Wood as senior vice president of publishing in early 2023.
Steppping up the pace
But it was the company’s deal with Savvy Games Group - who acquired Scopely for $4.9 billion in April 2023 - that really pushed them into the big leagues.
And neck and neck with the announcement of that deal came the reveal of Monopoly GO! and since then the company hasn’t looked back.
Scopely bought Dundee-based Tag Games, created clever crossovers between both Stumble Guys and Monopoly GO! to boost both titles, and enjoyed record earnings as a result.
But perhaps the greatest accolade is the fact that Hasbro, owners of the Monopoly brand, are now letting the IP loop come full circle by creating a board game based on - you guessed it - the Scopely-owned Monopoly GO! experience.
What comes around goes around, eh?
Congrats to our honourable mentions, Miniclip, SciPlay who both smashed it through 2023/2024 but the big prize has to go to Scopely. What a year! Here’s to the next!
