Video: What different cultures want from their mobile games

At Pocket Gamer Connects San Francisco 2015, Patrick Walker, VP of Insights at EEDAR, gave a talk on why people play games in different cultures.

Starting in North America, Walker revealed that most users play mobile games simply to pass the time, saying "mobile's created this opportunity to create this short experience where I can pass time while I'm waiting for something else to happen."

New experiences

This viewpoint is shared in Japan, China and South Korea, although because of cultural differences, and varying entry points into the gaming world, other reasons become more prominent.

As an example, Walker states that "for a lot of the 500 million mobile users in China, it's the first video game experience they've had", and so these users are more interested in new experiences than other countries and cultures might be.
