The release of EA's first quarter financial results for 2013 has served to highlight the increasing importance of mobile to the publisher, with other areas of its business suffering slowdowns.

On the back of company wide non-GAAP revenue of $491 million for the three months ending 30 June slightly lower than expectations EA cited the success of its social platform Origin, which now boasts 9 million users alone on mobile.

The company also revealed its games and services generated a 37 percent year-over-year increase in digital net revenue throughout the quarter.

Talking mobile

This supposed smartphone surge is set to counterbalance a slowdown in the publisher's fortunes on social platforms such as Facebook according to COO Peter Moore, who as reported by VentureBeat revealed that nine mobile and social games are due to launch in Q2 in the firm's conference call.

SimCity Social's run on Facebook has been a successful one Moore claimed, with 16 million monthly active users on board according to AppData, while EA has made $50 million on The Sims Social since last year.

As for EA Mobile itself, EA Labels boss said iOS and Android remain the most lucrative platforms for the company.

"The growth rates are high," he added.

"However, we are approaching devices from Amazon and Microsoft in an opportunistic manner. We are definitely working on ideas there."
