Given Chillingo built its name by reaching out to a succession of independent studios, news that it's set to be incorporated into EA's Partners program doesn't represent all too much of a departure for the firm.

It is, however, further evidence of EA's continued efforts to extend its presence in the portable space, bringing the set up it's used to sure up titles from smaller studios on console and PC for the last eight years to mobile for the first time.

Partner power"The EA Partners program has proven to be a phenomenally successful model," said EA Partners GM Bryan Neider.

"It is an all around win-win situation. The program allows EA to partner with some of the world's best console, PC and digital developers while providing those independent developers with a global distribution/publishing partner."

As part of the program, both Chillingo and Playfish purchased by EA in 2010 and 2009 respectively will offer independent studios a route to market on mobile marketplaces and social networks such as Facebook.

"Chillingo supports our talented indie developers in ways that make sense, whether it's helping cultivate and shape their ideas or bolstering promotions of their already great games with industry partners, press and consumers," added co-general manager at Chillingo, Chris Byatte.

Trading places

The news comes as former longterm EA Partners head David DeMartini announced he is stepping down from the role to work elsewhere in EA.

"I have been asked to take over our e-commerce division at EA and our central technology group, so I will be passing the torch, or beret as it may be," DeMartini said at GDC 2011, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

"It has been a great opportunity, career, and experience here at EA and to be able to speak with each of you on behalf of our partners."
