Roblox launches Cube 3D and mesh generation API for creators

Roblox has launched and open-sourced its Cube 3D model to make it accessible to users on and off the platform.
The UGC platform has also launched the beta version of its mesh generation API that developers can use to explore new directions and “increase" productivity.
Roblox said that Cube 3D “generates 3D models and environments directly from text and, in the future, image inputs" and that the generated object is “fully compatible with game engines today and can be extended to make objects functional".
“Cube will underpin many of the AI tools we’ll develop in the years to come, including highly complex scene-generation tools.,” Roblox said in a release. “It will ultimately be a multimodal model, trained on text, images, video, and other types of input - and will integrate with our existing AI creation tools."
Roblox continued: “Anyone can fine-tune, develop plug-ins for, or train Cube 3D on their own data to suit their needs. We believe that AI tools should be built on openness and transparency, which is why we are a committed partner in the open-source AI community."
Building the future
The UGC platform said that it envisions a future where AI is available to over 85 million of its daily users, letting them create within their gameplay experiences.
“We see a future where developers enable their users to become creators using AI. With the Mesh Generation API enabled, players can bring to life anything they can imagine," said Roblox.
Moreover, Roblox’s Cube 3D model aims to enable "4D creation," to create more interactive experiences where objects, environments, and people can interact with each other in real time. The open-source version of Cube 3D will be available from next week.
Beyond mesh generation, the plan is to expand into scene generation and understanding, allowing developers to create richer experiences. For example, AI tools could change a forest’s green leaves to fall foliage.
