Sega still aiming for Sonic Rumble 2025 release after last-minute delay

Sega still plans to launch mobile game Sonic Rumble in 2025 following multiple delays.
The company previously postponed the 32-player battle royale from winter to spring, then delayed it indefinitely just one week before the rescheduled release this month. However, Sega has stated via its latest financial report that the game will still launch globally this year.
The team stated earlier this month that delaying the game further was a "disappointing" decision, but that "taking this extra time is the right choice for the future of Sonic Rumble".
Weeks before the latest delay was made official, subsidiary Rovio’s head of beacon growth Veli Kiviaho informed us in an interview: "There’s also some optimisation to do. High-end devices play well and the game looks beautiful, but there is still some work to do to get the mid-tier devices running it smoothly."
Into the earnings
Sega’s financial results revealed that overall net revenue fell by almost 9% to ¥428.9 billion ($2.9bn) in its 2025 financial year. Operating income fell by nearly 17%, down to ¥48.1bn ($325.7 million), and ordinary income declined by 11% to ¥53.1bn ($364.1m).
However, Sega’s Entertainment Contents business, which includes games, saw net sales rise marginally from ¥320.4bn ($2.2bn) in FY2024 to ¥322.1bn ($2.2bn) in FY2025. Operating income in this category rose by 36% from ¥30.8bn ($211.1m) to ¥41.9bn ($287.2m).
Sega noted that it will "continue to introduce new titles and strive to grow major IPs such as Sonic through transmedia strategy".
This is likely in reference to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 film and Rovio’s Angry Birds Movie 3, both expected to release in cinemas in 2027.
