Lodsys may have started out by targeting relatively small iOS studios, but the latest amendment to its in-app purchase patents infringement claim has added some of the biggest boys in the neighbourhood to its target list.
The alteration, which was spotted by IP activist Florian Mueller, brings giants such as EA, Square Enix, Atari and Take-Two into the firing line, as well as Rovio of Angry Birds fame.
In all, the number of firms wrapped up in the lawsuit has now hit 37, though Lodsys has dropped all action against one firm - Vietnamese company Wulven Games.
Don't anger the Angry Boys
"Rovio makes, sells, uses, imports, and/or offers to sell infringing applications, including but not limited to Angry Birds for iPhone and Angry Birds for Android, which infringe at least claim 27 of the '565 patent under 35 USC 271," says the entry regarding the Finnish studio.
EA, meanwhile, is being sued in regards of The Sims 3 on iPhone, Atari for Atari's Greatest Hits for iPhone and iPad respectively, Square Enix for Big Hit Baseball on both iPhone and iPad and Take-Two for 2K Sports NHL 2K11 on iPhone.
"Lodsys is not afraid of suing deep-pocketed app developers," says Mueller of the changes.
"I'm not surprised, given that Lodsys has three other lawsuits going, all of them against big companies including the likes of HP, Brother, adidas, Best Buy, The New York Times Company, etc."
Mueller also believes the current roster of 37 companies is far from the final tally.
"Lodsys continues to go after Android apps as well. Google's silence and inactivity about this issue makes it likely that Lodsys will sue more Android developers if they don't pay."
