BlackBerry's demise - in the face of the two way tussle between iOS and Android - has been greatly exaggerated if figures published by madvertise is to be believed.
Building on Gfk's claim BlackBerry's share of the UK smartphone market rose to 26.3 percent in December 2011, the ad platform's numbers for the whole year show a similar resurgence.
Indeed, the German ad network claims BlackBerry's Europe-wide share jumped from little over 1 percent in January to just under 23 percent in December.
BlackBerry battler
"The stats, taken from the madvertise network, confirms that RIM experienced a HUGE increase in market share between January and December 2011," said the firm in a statement.
BlackBerry's expansion came largely at the expense of Symbian and other smartphone platforms rather than iOS and Android, with both increasing their shares by 9 percent and 1 percent respectively.
Estimates for the US courtesy of Millennial Media suggest BlackBerry also experienced growth on the other side of the Atlantic throughout 2011, albeit on a smaller scale, rising from a 14 percent smartphone share in January to 17 percent in November.
At the recent BlackBerry DevCon Europe, new CEO Thorsten Heins said BlackBerry was the #1 pre paid smartphone in Holland, the UK and Spain.
