Ad technology specialist Tapjoy has been acquired by virtual currency monetisation firm Offerpal Media, reports TechCrunch.
The site claims the move will be announced by Offerpal tomorrow.
Tapjoy, which released TapDefense on iPhone back in 2008, had more recently moved into the monetisation business itself, developing a toolset that enabled developers to increase ad revenue for free apps on the App Store.
Move on mobile
The acquisition will give Offerpal its first major inroads into the mobile market, the company having "begun to test offers in a few mobile games and apps" back in March, according to chairman and CEO George Garrick.
Indeed, it was Offerpal's experimentation with Tapjoy's TapDefense that drew the attention of TechCrunch earlier this month.
The site claimed the game harboured an SMS subscription scam through AdMob ads that tricked users into long-term subscriptions on their phones.
Garrick, who took control of Offerpal back in November, vowed to "meet stringent standards of integrity and quality" following the site's claims, and has today stated that his firm "dovetails nicely" with the operations of Tapjoy, which itself claims to have worked with over 1,000 publishers.
The right deal
Tapjoy's founders Lee Linden and Ben Lewis appear to agree, telling TechCrunch in a video interview that it was "the right time" to sell.
"Offerpal brings a lot to our company. We can really grow together and help make a great product and reach more customers that way," said Lewis.
Linden added, "We share a vision for taking what we're doing and really expanding. Using their resources and ours we can really win."
