The latest report from app analytics outfit Flurry has pegged the worldwide tally of Android and iOS devices at three-quarters of a billion.
These 750 million devices are based across more than 220 countries, the report says, and will generate $10 billion of revenue in 2012.
East beats west
The report's other key finding is that China is set to overtake the US as the nation with the greatest number of active iOS and Android devices.
Currently, the US boasts roughly 181 million devices but China is close behind on 167 million.
The UK is in third place, with a comparatively slim, but nonetheless significant 35 million active iOS and Android devices.
The surge
Flurry predicts that China will claim the top spot by the end of 2013's first quarter.
That title would no doubt fall to China sooner, were it not for the smartphone shopping sprees that are likely to accompany the American holiday season.
Indeed, China is the fastest single fastest growing iOS and Android market in the world. Flurry's figures chart the growth in active devices between October 2011 and October 2012 at 293 percent for the region.
This growth, Flurry states, is "spurred by the potent combination of its vast population and rapidly growing middle class," and shows no signs of stalling.
