Given social games are often written as not being games at all, news that Epic is working on a specialised version of Infinity Blade for DeNA's Mobage platform represents a curious marriage.
The updated release provisionally titled Infinity Blade X will be exclusive to Mobage on iOS in Japan at launch. It'll also be first game on the platform to utilise Epic's Unreal Engine 3.
Infinity and beyond
"The gameplay maintains the design and control features of the original version, while adding the ability for players to fight or collaborate with each other via the Mobage network," said DeNA of the adaptation.
"Infinity Blade X for Mobage will be free-to-play, with virtual goods on offer as well."
Although a paid game in the west, over a third of Infinity Blade's $10 million revenue has been generated via IAP.
It's the latest attempt by DeNA to add 'core' releases to Mobage's line up, which has traditionally been home to a bevy of casual releases.
Developed in collaboration with ChAIR Entertainment, Infinity Blade X is expected to launch this autumn.
