Google's monthly update on OS distribution makes for necessary reading for Android developers.
The figures for the 14 day period ending 3 January have shown that Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and 2.2 (Froyo) make up the biggest portion of the OS' distribution, with a collective share of 85 percent.
Share and share alike
Gingerbread managed to jump from 44.4 percent in November to 54.9 percent, while Froyo continues its aged fall, sinking from a 40.7 percent share in November to 30.4 percent share.
The tablet focused Android 3.0's (Honeycomb) share of distribution also fell, though less sharply by 0.2 percent down to 1.7 percent.
Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), featuring in the list for the first time, seems to be the cause of this slight fall, given that this latest Android OS version is compatible with both tablets and smartphones. It managed to chisel its way to 0.6 percent of the share.
