Mobile marketing and monetisation specialist W3i believes Microsoft's Windows 8 could prove to be a freemium force, with the firm encouraging developers to port iOS and Android releases to the platform.
In a post published on the firm's blog, W3i points to the platform's large install base and the Windows Store's impressive early download numbers as evidence of the scale of the opportunity for developers.
Furthermore, the monetisation outfit notes that Microsoft supports existing Live accounts on Windows 8 for handling credit card payments.
Party hard
As such, W3i argues that a significant number of Windows 8 users will be ready to make purchases from the off, with no need to re-enter their payment details.
Microsoft also offers its own ad product and in-app purchasing solution, although the latter doesn't allow for in-game virtual currency yet.
In the meantime, though, W3i remarks that third-party services are allowed on the platform.
Third-party development tools are welcome, too, including Unity, Marmalade and Unreal.
As a result, porting shouldn't be too problematic for many developers, although W3i suggests that studios should look to exploit the unique features of the Windows 8 OS such as live tiles, contact sharing and search.
A leg up
W3i ends its assessment of the Windows 8 platform with an explanation of the services that could boost a developer's chance of success in the Windows Store.
Microsoft's accelerator program and Windows 8 labs are both referenced services which provide developers with training and support for the creation of Windows 8 apps.
And of course, W3i's own services are also available to developers looking to make their debut on Microsoft's desktop and tablet OS. For more information on the company and the services it can offer, take a look at the W3i website.
