Our friends in the Nordics: Rovio launches its first game jam, Nonstop gets fuelled by funds, and Unity's Helgason to hit Nordic Game
In our efforts to give you the best view of the world's mobile gaming hotspots, we've decided to dedicate a regular slot to the comings and goings in the ever vibrant Nordic region.

(To those of you who skipped geography, that's essentially Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland.)

In the months ahead, expect to see the biggest developments from the Nordic region details across these pages – news that, with studios across the region enjoying international success, will no doubt define the mobile industry as we move forward.

News just like this, in fact...

Birds of a feather

Mobile game moguls and the brains behind the unavoidable Angry Birds – better known as Rovio - have teamed up with the Swedish Game Awards to host the first ever Rovio Game Jam.

The event, which is designed to celebrate all things handheld, will reward winners of the winning team with an iPad mini, as well as a chance to interview for a position at the studio.

"Stockholm has a lot of promising talent, and for us it's great to support and nurture that talent with events that can help them grow," said head honcho of Rovio’s Stockholm branch, Oskar Burman.

"Also, it's fun! We hope to see some interesting game ideas developed! If this is successful our intentions is definitely to do this as an annual event, and Stockholm will be the primary location."

The event is due to begin on Friday 19 April in the Swedish captial Stockholm.

Tis the season

Spring is in the air, and this is the season when studios look to get funded.

With a plethora of developers donning fancy frocks in a bid to attract the right kind of attention and financial support, it's a time of long days and even longer – and largely tense - nights.

One such studio that can breathe a sigh of relief is Finnish based Nonstop Games. The firm recently announced it had secured $2.9 million to fund the development of 'core mobile games' such as Heroes of Honor (below) for iOS and Android.

"We are extremely excited to be supported by world class investors in our mission to build the next generation of free-to-play games for touch devices," said CEO and founder Juha Paananen.

"Our aim is to make games people can live, not just play. We want to create immersive experiences that are tailor-made for tablet and mobile. Heroes of Honor will be the first title to show this," added president and co-founder Henric Suuronen.

Talk, talk

The Nordic Game conference – now in its tenth year - has announced the addition of Unity CEO, David Helgason as the events keynote speaker.

Helgason's presentation is titled "Extreme success with mobile: challenges and solutions", and he will join a bevy of respected names from Rovio and DICE – amongst others - as well as Tim Schafer.

Nordic Game 2013 is due to take place in Malmo between 22-24 May. More details can be found on the event's website.
