Media Molecule's critically acclaimed PS Vita adventure Tearaway took home three titles last night at the BAFTA Games Awards 2014, including the best mobile and handheld release.
Tearaway toppled mobile classics such as Ridiculous Fishing, The Room Two, BADLAND, DEVICE 6 and Plants vs. Zombies 2 to top the category, with the handheld title also winning the artistic achievement and family categories.
Tearaway on top
"We learned about the power of charming our audience, keeping them smiling while they play, with art, audio and the flow of the game," the game's lead creator Rex Crowle recently told us.
"There's elements of Labyrinth, Where the Wild Things Are and Time Bandits.
"There's the strange folklore and rituals I grew up with, the personalities of the Tearaway team - animator Lluis is exactly like a Wendigo when his computer crashes. There's some Stanley Kubrick in there, too."
A matter of importance
Also of note, the ones to watch award was won by DOS Studios for iOS and Android release Size DOES Matter, which earned its nomination for the category through Dare to be Digital.
The fast-paced side-scrolling rhythm action game had previously won £25,000 from Channel 4 at last year's Dare ProtoPlay games festival, and is set to be published buy the firm later in 2014.
"We feel amazing for winning the award and could not be here without the help of a lot of people," said Mattis Delerud of DOS Studios at the awards ceremony.
"We would really like to thank the team at Abertay University keep doing what you are doing. You guys rock!"
Applications for this year's Dare to be Digital are now open over on the firm's official website, with those selected invited to travel to Dundee to build new titles in eight weeks.
