170,000 Pokemon Go trainers flood Dortmund during Safari Zone event

Pokemon Go’s Safari Zone event saw over 170,000 players descend on the German city of Dortmund last weekend.

Centred in the city’s Westfalenpark, players from across the world travelled to Dortmund for the two-day event. Each noon, over 10,000 players gathered for a mass group photo.

Team lounges for each of Go’s three factions were available, seating up to 900 each. The event also featured “diverse culinary treats”, and photo opportunities with pikachu.

Rare catch

In the park alone, over 28.6 million Pokemon were caught over the weekend. The event brought a larger frequency of rare “shiny” monsters to the field, while the typically tropical-exclusive Corsola could be caught. Trainers also had the chance to catch Unown in new shapes resembling the letters D-O-R-T-M-U-N-D.

Safari Zone Dortmund marks the start of Pokemon Go’s Summer Tour. Chicago will play host Pokemon Go Fest 2018 from 14th-15th July, while another Safari Zone will be held in Yokosuka, Japan at an undefined date later this summer.

Things are still looking strong for the AR monster catcher. Last month, Pokemon Go hit the 800 million mark for downloads.
