2010 In Review: Mark Ettle, Cobra Mobile

One of the Dundee cluster of experienced mobile game companies, Cobra Mobile typically operates under the radar.

However, when it came to building on the foundation of its multi-million downloaded iBomber franchise - in the form of TD game iBomber Defense, released towards the end of the year - it went high profile, signing up the game to the newly EA-purchased Chillingo for an additional marketing push.

Mark Ettle is the company's MD.

PocketGamer: What was the most significant event of 2010?

Mark Ettle: When Apple launched the iPad, everyone went Wow'. Then with the iPhone 4 and Retina display, everyone went 'Fucking wow' and Apple jumped 12 months ahead of everyone again.

What was the most significant event for Cobra Mobile?

The Retina display on iPhone 4 and iPod touches. The clarity and detail enabled by these displays made gaming so much more appealing and moved us toward a more console-esque feel.

What was your favourite mobile game of the year?

That's easy - iBomber Defense.

What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2011?

The tablet market will grow, and the iPad 2 will show us where that market is going.

I think we will also see dedicated content channels appear which will hook into social and trend-based aspects of gaming and beyond.

And Google will hopefully figure out how to de-fracture Android, and move to a real monetisation of content without relying on ad support.

If you could enforce one New Year's resolution, what would it be?

Stop creating 15 wheels every year. Just create one.

Thanks to Mark for his time.
