Industry moves before it's pushed

GREE and DeNA to limit teenage monthly spending in Japan
Are in-app purchases too frictionless?

Around the world, various advocates - often parent groups - think so, and want tighter controls on the practise.

In Japan, the industry has decided to take matters into its own hands, with the two big social gaming networks GREE and DeNA starting to limit monthly spending in June.

Pocket money

According to the Japan Times, GREE will limit monthly spending for 16 to 19-year-olds to ¥10,000 (around $125). DeNA will have a similar cap for 16 to 17 year-olds.

Both companies will impose a ¥5,000 limit (around $62) for users who are 15 or younger.

The move is the result of a committee that also includes smaller social gaming outfits NHN Japan, CyberAgent, Dwango, and Mixi.
