Multi-device strategy will attract developers to webOS, claims HP

Multi-device strategy will attract developers to webOS, claims HP
The app market on printers might not initially seem like a big bucks business, but Hewlett Packard believes bringing webOS to its printer line-up could ensure it entices more developers to support the platform.

Speaking during an interview with Reuters, HP's chief strategy and technology officer Shane Robison laid out the firm's outline to incorporate webOS in its entire range of products.

As such, the 50 million printers HP ships worldwide every year form a crucial part of its plans.

"This isn't strictly focused on the tablet," Robison said.

"We're going to have printers, even some printers that have detachable, smaller slate devices on them."

It's Robison's belief that the sheer number of printers HP sells will make webOS an even more attractive platform for developers in the years to come, with bulking up the number of apps on the Palm App Catalog as a whole vital to ensure its longterm success.

"We need a rich catalog of apps and we're working hard on that," Robison concluded.

Robison also confirmed that HP has no plans to release an Android powered tablet, although work is still ongoing on its Windows 7 powered Slate device.
