Google delays Android release in China as cyber-cold war escalates

Two handsets shelved during dispute

Google delays Android release in China as cyber-cold war escalates
As you're undoubtedly aware, two of the biggest nations on the planet - China and Google - have been posturing over cyberattacks and internet control. Google is apparently "reassessing" its position within China, and has now brought its Android smartphone OS into the fray.

The internet giant has indefinitely postponed the Chinese release of two Android-powered handsets, one each from Motorola and Samsung.

Both handsets were due to be sold through China Unicom, which has made a lot of headway in bringing the iPhone to China, and will now presumably be putting all its weight behind the Apple device to take up the revenue gap left by the shelved Android handsets.

LG currently has an Android handset on the Chinese market, but this is likely to deliver quite a blow to the platform's popularity in the world's largest mobile user base. Perhaps Google is happy without a Chinese presence, but this move certainly won't endear it to handset manufacturers.

Yes. Spanner's his real name. And, yes, he's heard that joke before.
