Is there still a market for dedicated portable games consoles?

Nintendo is learning new lessons about managing user expectations, unit pricing and the power of triple-A software, and now Sony is taking its first steps down the same road.

Launched over the weekend in Japan, initial figures from analytic outfit Enterbrain suggest the PS Vita got off to a good start with 321,407 units reportedly sold on Saturday and Sunday.

This compares with 166,074 of the original PSP sold on its launch date in 2004, and 371,326 3DS' sold over its launch weekend.

It's thought that Sony shipped around 700,000 units to retail, with 500,000 of the more expensive 3G-enabled devices shipped in a limited edition, which included 100 hours of free data.

PS Vita comes to Europe and North America on 22 February, priced at $249/€249 for the wi-fi version and $299/€299 for the 3G version.
