UK trade association TIGA has announced that it will stage its first industry awards event in November 2012, as part of the ExPlay Festival taking place in Bath.
TIGA plans to hand out awards in a total of 23 categories. Entering the awards is open now and free of charge, although TIGA's 'business of games categories' are only open to TIGA members.
Double dip
Members and non-members alike can enter to be considered for an award in the 'games categories', though, which include best casual game, best social game and best student game, among others.
"TIGA is the organisation for developers and digital publishers. So the TIGA Awards are designed to celebrate creative and technical excellence and to commend business proficiency in the games industry," explained TIGA CEO Dr Richard Wilson.
"Our 'games categories' are open to all and free to enter. They provide an opportunity to highlight the current achievements of our industry and to applaud promising start-ups, debut games and students.
"TIGA wants to ensure that the achievements of smaller studios are recognised."
As such, five of TIGA's game awards will be handed out twice with one gong presented to a large studio, and one to a small studio.
In this way, the organisation hopes to ensure that smaller players in the UK industry gain just as much recognition as bigger, richer studios.
The process
Those interested have until 8 October to enter for the awards.
Later that month, TIGA will publish the full list of entries on its awards website and ask the industry to vote for its favourite entrants.
The top three entries in each category will then form a shortlist to be assessed by TIGA's panel of judges. These industry figures will choose the winner for each category.
