Industry insight suggests a games-equipped Apple TV may be around the corner, but the firm's rivals aren't waiting to play catch up.
As an extension of its existing efforts in the smart TV market, Korean electronics giant LG has partnered with Unity Technologies to serve up a library of games for its 2012 models, all controlled by a new gyroscopic motion controller dubbed the Magic Motion Remote.
Said sets will also come equipped with a powerful video processor to power the titles, with Unity CFO David Helgason claiming the deal strengthens its role with developers.
Opportunities abound
"The television technology LG is introducing this year is very impressive and offers an incredible opportunity for the developers under the Union umbrella to reach a new market," said Helgason.
"Our goal with Union is to create new avenues of distribution for developers using Unity, and LG smart TVs are creating a massive and new gaming audience."
Sang-Woo Lee, head of content division of LG TV, also claimed "adding a huge catalog of Unity-authored titles to the line-up of games available on LG TVs will boost the incredible value that our customers receive when choosing one of our HDTV models."
He concluded, "We want our TVs to be the most comprehensive platform for entertainment on the market and having access to such an impressive array of games helps make that happen."
Few specific games have been named as of yet, though the deal's press blitz does cite Madfinger's Shadowgun and Kiloo Games' Frisbee Forever, both previously demonstrated at CES 2012.
