Microsoft might not be keen to trumpet its handset sales to date, but one area where Windows Phone is proving competitive is in the number of apps it supports.
Even when the platform's userbase was virtually non-existent, Windows Phone Marketplace's library still accelerated.
Now All About Window Phone reports the total number has surpassed 50,000, hitting the landmark figure within 14 months.
Edging Android
Impressively for Microsoft, that means Windows Phone's marketplace is growing at a faster rate than Android Market at the same stage, which took 19 months to hit the same figure.
In comparison, Apple's App Store took 12 months.
What's more, the rate of growth itself is on the rise. It took Windows Phone Marketplace more than a year to pass 40,000 apps. The last 10,000 has been amassed in 40 days flat.
Game for a game
A little further investigation reveals more than 3,500 games have been submitted to the marketplace since launch, making up 14 percent of the store's total.
This makes games the joint second most popular category on the platform, behind entertainment on 15 percent and level with books and reference and tools and productivity.
Of the apps submitted, 58 percent were free, with 14 percent of the paid titles offering a free trial.
