Industry panel looks at the (bleak) future of mobile operating systems
The Multimedia Research Company (TMRC) has released the results of a survey consisting of 147 mobile industry executives spread across 38 countries, which attempts to gleam the industry’s sentiments on the future mobile development platforms and operating systems.

The survey measured current mobile formats against four key factors to determine their status within the market, and what the future could hold for them:

  • Most Successful Now and in 5 Years' Time

  • Rising Star or Fading Star

  • Here to Stay or Unlikely to be around in 5 Years' Time

  • Likely to be adopted or dropped in the next couple of years

A number of DPs and Oss received rather unfavourable results, with 47 per cent of the panellists viewing Nokia’s N-Gage as a ‘fading star’, 22 per cent feeling J2ME is ‘unlikely to be around in five years' time’ and only 15 per cent believing Palm is ‘here to stay’.

To be fair to Palm, however, the Pre and brand new WebOS were only announced half way through the survey, and significant interest has gathered around the company’s reboot since then.

“We acknowledge that these results represent industry sentiment at a particular point in time and we do not expect rival DPs/OSs to simply lie down and die," says TMRC’s managing director, Vic Whiting. "However, they will all have to raise their games quickly and forcefully if they are to counter the momentum and impact being achieved by the likes of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android."

Yes. Spanner's his real name. And, yes, he's heard that joke before.
