Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, managing director of Revolution Software Charles Cecil has revealed that the long-awaited iPhone adaptation of the classic adventure game Beneath a Steel Sky has seen around 20,000 downloads in its first month.
"It's so exciting that we can take something that was released so long ago and put it on the iPhone. We're in a wonderful position where we can exploit our own games in a way that you could never do at a mainstream publisher," Cecil told the Eurogamer Expo in Leeds.
Although 20,000 isn't an epic number of sales for an iPhone game, most that reach that capacity are only the very low priced and free applications. That a retro re-release in the mid price range is moving a large number of units bodes well for more in-depth, premium releases that could curb the spate of 'race to the bottom' App Store titles.
"The great thing about the Apple system is that it's so easy to use, it's easier to buy it [than resort to piracy] and it's cheap," Cecil concludes. Although many iPhone developers might well disagree regarding the levels of piracy on the platform, its reassuring to hear that the iPhone success stories haven't dried up.
