With Android gaining plenty of support among OEMs, US chip company Qualcomm is looking to get its hands on some mobile operating system action too.
Its BREW mobile application technology has been subtly repositioned as the Brew Mobile Platform (Brew MP).
Targeted particularly at mass-market handsets and what Qualcomm refers to the low-cost smartphone category, this mobile OS is backward compatible so supports the thousands of legacy Brew apps and games, while providing operators and developers with a stable future platform for their apps.
"Brew MP, as a native and fully realised mobile OS, boasts new APIs that give developers the ability to directly access ASIC hardware for optimal application performance functionality, while abstracting the various chipset hardware interfaces for software reuse and easier chipset handset migration," said Cristiano Amon, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.
In combination with this, Qualcomm says it will be releasing a host of new tools and services such as revamped online resources for developers, and standardised and cheaper app testing facilities.
The first Brew MP devices should be available in late summer 2010, with AT&T already signed up as launch customer with handsets from Samsung, HTC, LG, and Pantech.
