Is the mobile gaming cup half full or half empty? That's been the issue for publishers such as Glu Mobile and I-play.
As the traditional carrier market declines, the smartphone market is accelerating fast and everyone knows smartphone owners consumer a lot more content than their feature phone counterparts.
Thanks to the latest MobiLens survey data from comScore, we can put a number on this relationship.
Smart is smarter
Polling US mobile gamers about their habits between December 2009 to February 2010, it reckons 47 percent smartphone owners play games on their phone at least once a month, compared to 16 percent of feature phone owners.
Taken on a daily basis, they are more than five times more likely to play games (13 percent versus 2.5 percent).
Smartphone owners also install significantly more games on their devices with 27.3 percent having installed at least one game compared to just 5.6 percent of feature phone owners.
Less smarts
The transition between these two groups one - one large but falling, the other small but growing - means that comScore records a 13 percent of US mobile gamers over the past 12 months however.
"Although the number of mobile gamers has declined in the past year, there is reason for significant optimism about the future of this market," said Mark Donovan, comScore's senior analyst.
"As the market transitions from feature phones to smartphones, the dynamics of gameplay are also shifting towards a higher quality experience. As a result, we can expect to see a profound increase in adoption of this activity, both in terms of audience size and overall engagement."
