Finnish mobile manufacturer Nokia remains the world's largest player according to the latest statistics released by research firm Gartner, selling 110 million handsets in Q1 2010.
Nokia retains a healthy lead over the competition with 35 percent of the market, with sales up by more than 12.7 million units when compared to Q1 2009.
However, despite this rise, Nokia's share has actually fallen slightly, down from 36.2 percent this time last year.
Juicy Apple
The biggest mover is Apple, which has seen its sales more than double year-on-year based on Gartners figures.
The firm estimates Apple sold just under 8.4 million units in the quarter, up from around 3.9 million during the same period last year.
Samsung is the second biggest player, according to Gartner, accounting for 20.6 percent of market with sales up by more than 13 million units to 64.9 million across the quarter.
Smartphone triumph for Symbian
In terms of smartphone OSs, Symbian holds top spot, with 44.3 percent of the market down from 48.8 percent.
Apple is in thid place in this particular contest, its share rising by almost 5 percent to 15.4 percent in total.
However, it still trails RIM in second place with a 19.4 percent share, while sales of Android handsets are motoring, totalling 5.2 million across the quarter and snatching a 9.6 percent share of the market up from Q1 2009's 1.6 percent share.
In total, smartphones sales represented 17.3 percent of all handsets sold across the quarter, up from 13.6 percent a year ago.
